Todd Crandell has dedicated his personal and professional life to assisting those battling addictions and destructive behaviors. He knows firsthand the importance of attaining and sustaining sobriety through a balanced holistic lifestyle. By sharing his personal experiences about the perils of substance abuse, along with innovative and unique approaches in prevention and treatment, Crandell offers a positive alternative to those struggling to overcome a life of addiction and self-destruction. His 13-year struggle with drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life, devastating relationships with family and friends and shattering the promise of a professional hockey career. However, through his pursuit of extreme physical fitness and personal well-being, he found a productive outlet for his once-negative energies, transforming himself into a world-class athlete and champion for sobriety.
Crandell’s experiences and inspirational efforts led to the formation of Racing for Recovery in 2001, a federally approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping everyone affected by addiction. A multi-faceted empowerment group, Racing for Recovery offers support group meetings, intensive outpatient groups (IOP), individual and family counseling, interventions, assessments, specialized treatment plans, speaking engagements, and urinalysis testing to help develop and promote a balanced holistic lifestyle.
In the process of rebuilding his life, Crandell realized traditional recovery programs weren’t always enough to help people refocus their addictive drives into positive actions. In his pursuit of recovery, he applied his energy to pursue the most grueling sport imaginable, the IRONMAN triathlon – a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a 26.2-mile run. Crandell completed his first IRONMAN triathlon in 1999 and has never looked back. Clean and sober since 1993, Crandell has completed 28 full-length IRONMAN triathlons across the world. In 2008, within one week, he completed both the IRONMAN Western Australia and the Ultraman Hawaii triathlon, a three-day test of endurance consisting of 6.2 miles of swimming and 90 miles of biking on day one, 170.2 miles of biking on day two, and 52.4 miles of running on day three. He was the only person in the world to do so that year. Todd has also earned the prestigious AWA (All World Athlete) IRONMAN status.
Todd Crandell is a regular guest speaker for school districts, jail systems and detention centers, drug treatment facilities, businesses, organizations and community events nationwide. As someone who has been to the depths of despair, battled addiction, contemplated suicide, destroyed relationships with family and friends, and then did the work it takes to recover, Todd Crandell forms a strong, unique connection with his audience. Racing for Recovery™ has expanded its public speaking reach to include fitness institutions, triathlon clubs, collegiate athletic department, recovery based treatment providers and community centers.
