Based on the December 2012 release of National Institute of Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment (NIH Publication No. 12–4180), research has shown that treatment programs that encourage exercise as part of the recovery program has proven effective and helps the addict to cope with stress, negative self-esteem and weight gain following cessation, which help sustain sobriety.
